Valentine's Day Layout by Mendi Yoshikawa using the #WeGoTogether collection from @PebblesInc. @SnippetsByMendi

It’s Mendi here today with a layout featuring the happy “We Go Together” collection.  I love how these papers are perfect for so many things including children’s scrapbook layouts!  My daughter has a little guy friend who she spends a lot of time with from our neighborhood, but I didn’t want to create a gushy Valentine’s Day layout about their special relationship and the darling images in this collection were perfect for this!

To balance out those darling peanut butter and jelly jars I made a fun little heart shaker for the top right corner of my layout, paired with some of the adorable bumblebee stickers.

To recreate the shaker element featured on my layout, you will need the following supplies:

  • 4 heart outlines cut from thin chipboard (I used Silhouette chipboard for mine)
  • 1 heart outline cut from patterned paper for shaker front
  • 1 heart of same size from patterned paper for shaker back
  • 1 small piece of clear acetate
  • 1 dozen pieces of heart confetti

Step 1:  Apply adhesive to back of patterned paper heart and adhere to piece of clear acetate.  Using scissors trim around the outside edge of your heart (I chose to do this by hand because my acetate was heavy and I didn’t want to damage my die-cutting machine blade).

Step 2:  Layer and stack the thin chipboard hearts adding liquid adhesive between each set of hearts.  Next add these behind the acetate layer so they are in line with the patterned paper heart.

Step 3:  Flip your layered heart (patterned paper side down) and fill with confetti hearts.  Finally add the full-sized heart to the back to enclose the confetti.  It is now ready to add to the front of a card or layout.

If you aren’t already addicted to making these, I hope you will give this fun technique a try on your next project!  🙂

Getting Organized with Photo Collage Tutorial

Get Organized with Dream Room Layout by Mendi Yoshikawa using #HappyDay! collection from @PebblesInc. @SnippetsByMendi

Hello there!  It’s Mendi here today with a layout sharing my love for organization using Pebbles new Happy Day collection!  As I state in my journaling, I adore organizing my stash almost as much as I love being creative with it!  I thought it would be fun to create a layout documenting some of my favorite ways I do this.

To give my page a splash of color and a fun element, I added a border of pennants below my mat using all the awesome tone-on-tone prints from the collection.  For my title I die-cut the word “dream” using navy vinyl on my Silhouette using THIS cutting file.  I love the way it looks when paired with the wood grain Thickers from the collection!

One of the questions I get asked the most is how I print multiple small photos on one 4×6 print.  While I own software where I can perform this task, I was searching for a free solution for those who can’t afford this option.  I was ecstatic to discover Picasa offers a free and easy download that does it beautifully (available for download HERE).

After downloading and installing Picasa on your computer, select the photos you want to use in your collage by holding down the “CTRL” key and clicking on each image.  While they are still selected, go to the “Create” tab at the top and select the “Picture Collage” option in the pull down menu.

You will now arrive at this screen (I have zoomed to the top, left-hand corner to make it easier to see).  This is where you are able to select the type of collage you want.  I chose a simple grid option.

Next you are able to chose your spacing on a sliding scale.  This can help shrink your photos if you are wanting them smaller or give a nice white border between them if you want to frame your photos.

Next you can chose your page format depending on whether you want them to fit on a 4×6, 5×7 or 8×10 print.  I forgot to include an arrow, but depending on the orientation of your photos, directly below this drop down menu you can also select between the portrait or landscape option.

At this point you can move the photos around within your collage to the right by dragging and dropping them.  When you are satisfied with the arrangement, click the “Create Collage” button to the left.

This will take you to a new window where you can save it to your computer.  I chose my own location to make finding it easier later by clicking on the “browse” button.  I wanted my image to be really good quality, but I found using the original size was way too huge, so I changed it to 3000 pixels with maximum quality.  This may be a larger file that you need for a 5×7 sized portrait, but it worked for me.  Your last step is to hit the “export” button.  I was able to find the image in the spot where I saved it and upload it to Costco for my printing.  It was super easy and I love that it was free!  🙂

Here’s a shot of what my finished 5×7 collage looked like.  At this point I still wasn’t quite sure how I was going to use these little shots, but I knew if I was going to fit all these pictures on my one-page layout, they would have to be small.  In the end I decided to crop them without their borders and add them to long 12-inch white cardstock strips, but I think this collage was still a really nice, quick way to achieve this.

This is a great trick for saving money on printing and fitting more on a page.  I use it all the time to add two to four images to one 4×6 photo.

Using Rub-ons in Layouts and Cards

You’re going to love the how Wendy Antenucci has been playing with all of the Pebbles rub-ons. Learn how she’s using rub-ons in layouts and cards!

Rub Ons

I have a tendency to hold onto my supplies because I never know when I might need them.  But when I saw the assignment for rub-ons I pulled out what was left of my favorite rub-on sheets and I went to town experimenting!
Rub-on experiment
I first began by applying my white rub-ons to white cardstock and then I tried various medias to bring out the designs.  I used ink pads as shown in the first picture and while it worked, it wasn’t a crisp image like I had hoped.  My next try was with watercolors; this method made my rub-ons pop and it was much easier to blend my colors.  My final try (with gold rub-ons because my white ones were all gone) was with mist; it wiped off the rub-ons like the watercolors, but I didn’t feel comfortable blending my colors.

Here is one of the cards I created from my experiment, you can find the other finished card and another layout using mist/rub-ons on my blog.
I was having such a good time creating with the rub-ons in the new Birthday Wishes line that I created this layout next and had to share it.

I had this great idea to cut out pieces of the paper to nestle my pictures from my 8year olds birthday.  It allowed my not so great pictures to shine on the dark paper by cropping them and not needing to have them in larger sizes.  I used the best picture of this set in the largest block to call attention to it.

I love the pops of color from the Thickers and some of the stickers, the dark background made the colors so fun, perfect for our boy.

I really wanted to show the age of our boy using the candles and they fit perfectly in the bottom square, by using the tag as an “envelope” I was able to house my candles and fill up another square in my layout.

I use the gold seal and some of the happy gold rub-ons to add some wow factor to my layout.
Make sure you to stop by my blog and see a step-by-step tutorial for the birthday page I created, see you there.
