Upcycled Craft Room Organization

Happy New Year! Amanda here today. Like many of you, one of my goals in the new year is to de-clutter and become more organized, especially in my craft room. One of my go-to organizing techniques is upcycling everyday items to use as craft room storage and organization.

With crafting comes a lot of little items–embellishments, tools, adhesives–that can get lost in the shuffle if not properly organized. Upcycling common household items is an easy and inexpensive (practially free!) way to get a handle on the bits and bobbles that can overrun your craft space.

Although it is hiding in the upper left hand corner of this photograph, cans wrapped with patterned paper make the most perfect pencil cups (or home décor or gift containers).

One of my favorite items to upcycle and use as storage containers on my desk are plain, ol’ soup cans. Cans of all sizes have a purpose in my craft room. I keep most of my small tools and supplies in paint dipped soup cans on back of my desk. Make your own paint dipped soup cans by wrapping a can with painters tape and adding two coats of acrylic paint.

Plastic powdered drink containers are also a favorite of mine. I glued several containers together to created a stacked pencil holder. Positioned on its side, this pencil holder allows me to easily see all of my writing utensils in their various colors. TIP: Use a liquid adhesive suitable for plastic when adhering the containers together.

Empty jars are also a favorite of mine. They are great for storing collections of small embellishments like buttons, or for corralling collections of stamps or larger embellishments. TIP: Spray paint the lids for a cohesive look.

Although this pegboard is not upcycled, it is the most handy organization piece I have in my craft room.  To help maximize space, I hung a shelf on the bottom of my pegboard and use it to hold upcycled containers filled with pencils and straws.

What are some of your tried and true craft room organizing techniques? Happy organized New Year to you!

Upcycled Halloween Treat Containers

Happy Halloween, Pebbles fans!  Amanda here today.  I love candy.  I love eating it and I love giving it away, which makes Halloween the perfect holiday for me.  Now that I’m a little older, I try to focus on giving away more candy than I eat.  It helps reduce the temptation to stuff my face with peanut butter cups all day long.

Upcycling and repurposing food containers is one of my favorite ways to make quick gift containers.  I have a h-u-g-e bag (or two) filled with jars, cans, bottles, and boxes just for the purpose of making treat jars, pencil cups, and storage containers.  Sure, sometimes the labels can be tricky, but it is super convenient and, above all, good for the Earth.  These plastic containers are dressed up with washi tape, tags, and twine.  They take minutes to put together and don’t require any special techniques.  Bonus!

I’ll bet you recognize the shape of this container!   Frosting containers are seriously my favorite.  They are just the right size for giving away larger pieces of candy.  Don’t these bloodshot eyeball gumballs look perfectly creepy?  Worried about travelling with an open container? Place the candy in a clear cellophane bag and tie with a pretty bow before putting the candy in the container.

Pebbles Chips are one of my favorite Pebbles products.  They are perfect for making cute tags for your upcycled treat containers.  I think this skeleton looks extra cute with a little twine bow on her head.

Repurposing a plastic container into a gift container is easy.  For this project you will need: empty containers, washi tape, tags, and twine.

Trim your washi tape to size by wrapping the washi sheet around your treat container and cutting off the excess.  The shorter the washi strips, the easier they are to work with.  Plus, you will have saved the little extra washi strips to use on cards and layouts later.

Wrap the washi strips around the container one at a time, starting at the top.  Using the nice, straight edge at the top as a guide will ensure that all of your washi tape lines up nicely.  Start by adhering your washi tape in the middle on the front.  Adhere one side at a time until the ends overlap on the back of the container.

The lid for the middle container was originally light blue.  Yuck!  CRAFTY TIP: Spray paint lids so they coordinate with your treat containers.  Choose a spray paint that is compatible with type of lid you are painting (i.e., plastic, metal).

Happy Haunting!

Amanda

Upcycled Treat Jars

Did you catch the fun Mason jars with 3-D tags we shared this morning? This afternoon we’re back, with a bit more modern take on the treat jar idea with Amanda, from Popper and Mimi.

Handmade Holiday Gifts

upcycled treat jars

All year long I save cute jars and cans for those last-minute gift giving moments.  Upcycling jars into treat cans is super easy and only takes a few minutes.  For extra flair, make your own gift bow to put on top.

upcycled treat jar tags

I usually choose the jar decor based on the type jar itself.  The jar on the left has a very hip and modern feel so I chose a simple candy with clean lines.  I chose a modern color palette and kept the tag and bow simple and crisp.  The jar on the right has a more rustic and country feel so I dolled it up with festive gingham and plenty of polka dots.  And just for fun, I call these the City Mouse and Country Mouse jars.

The tags on each jar are simple but still keep with the overall theme of each jar.  I trim most of my tags by hand.  I start with a rectangle, snip the corners, and punch a hole in the top.  Add a simple sentiment to the tag and the jar is ready to give.

Making handmade gift bows is quick and easy.  Here’s how I did it.
how to make a gift bow
Trim 7 lengths of ribbon–three at 5 3/4″, three at 4 1 /4″ and one at 2 1/2″.  Twist the ends of each ribbon and adhere to the center of the ribbon with an adhesive dot.  Adhere the similarly sized pieces together with adhesive dots and then stack the layers.  Fold the shortest ribbon into a circle and adhere to the center of the bow.
It only takes a few minutes to make a single bow.  I used 3/8″ ribbon for these bows, but you could easily use wider ribbon or even strips of paper.

DIY Indoor BBQ Picnic

Hi everyone. It’s Heather Leopard and I am sharing a DIY Indoor Picnic Idea with you today.  I don’t know about you but I love picnics. We do them as a family all the time but they aren’t always a normal picnic at the park. We also picnic in the front and back yard but what my girls really love to do is picnic in the house. We basically layout out blankets and/or towels in a room other than our dining room and there’s just something really fun and special about it.

DIY Indoor Picnic

I surprise my girls with an indoor picnic every couple of months because sometimes it just seems like the fun thing to do.  Just don’t plan to do it on spaghetti night due to the fact that it can be a mess.  While you can certainly use your normal dishes for an indoor picnic, I figured we should make it fun by creating a picnic caddy for the house. As a result, it’s basically everything we need in one little package.

Create a picnic caddy

You can use a box or a crate for this, an upcycled fast food drink tote or almost anything you’d like. I had cardstock and my die cut machine therefore, I chose to make one out of paper.

This is great for utensils, condiments, straws, napkins, you name it. While it’s not carrying anything especially heavy, it holds up pretty good. You probably don’t want to load it up with drinks unless you really reinforce it.

Add some custom plates

I wanted to create custom plates so I bought clear plastic plates and lined them with patterned paper.  Simply trace the center of the plate on your favorite patterned paper, cut it out and adhere it to the bottom with mod podge.  NOTE: only apply the mod podge to the bottom of the plate.  I’m pretty sure you don’t want to eat from a mod podged plate since it probably has chemicals you may not want to ingest but maybe I’m wrong?!?!

Picnic themed invitation

Next, create a cute little apron card. I downloaded this one from the Silhouette store. Isn’t the grill set cute?

This can be an invitation to the picnic, a menu (on the inside) or just a cute piece of decor in addition to whatever else you have planned.

So there you have it… a fun DIY Indoor Picnic that’s as cute as can be.  Just add your favorite food & beverage and dine in style.

Paper Succulents

Hello everyone! Amanda here today. One of my favorite ways to use paper is to make plants and planters. They are easy to make and require no maintenance. Just my type of plant!

Luckily for you and me, succulents are still trending, and it is no wonder why. They are cute, exotic, small, and easy to care for. Whether or not you have a green thumb, you can brighten up your space by making some paper succulents in no time. Upcycle some cans by wrapping them in some bright gold foiled papers and you’ll have some superb decor on your hands.

Gold foiled specialty papers from Pebbles are my favorite for making home decor items. I used two different papers and wrapped them around this regular ol’ can to create a bright and trendy succulent “planter”.

Have fun with the colors of your succulents. Create an off-beat color scheme or one that matches your decor. That’s the beauty of creating paper plants. Using textured cardstock gives the plants a more life-like feel, too.

These gold polka dots are my favorite. My favorite pencil cup is wrapped in the exact same paper. To make this Christmas cactus, die cut two of each piece and adhere on both sides of a narrow gauge floral wire. This will allow you to bend and twist the limbs until they are just right.

Plant your paper succulents in a container full of rice. It makes it easy to rearrange your plants and the weight of the rice holds the container in place. Want more fun ideas for upcycling or repurposing cans? Click HERE or stop by the Pebbles Blog and search “upcycle” in the search bar.
Have a great day!
