Hula Girl scrapbook layout, free cut file and tutorial

Aloha everyone!  Heather Leopard here today to talk to you about journaling but first, I just have to say—I love working with the Sunshiny Days collection! They are perfect for all the fun summer activities we’ve been doing as a family.  From the pool to the beach (and all the sweet treats in-between), it seems to cover the full spectrum.  Naturally, it was my go-to for documenting my sweet daughter practicing her hula dancing on the beach. Take a look below at the hula girl scrapbook layout I created and then I’ll walk you through a step-by-step tutorial.

Hula Girl scrapbook supplies

This layout can be used for any type of tropical, summertime activity. To re-create this layout, you’ll need to gather a few supplies…

  • patterned paper for palm leaves
  • my free palm leaves cut file for Silhouette
  • ephemera
  • stickers
  • Thickers
  • adhesive

A perfect cut

Print a photo that’s approximately 7″ w x 9″ h and place it in the upper right corner of the page.

Then cut a 9 1/2″ circle template out of scrap paper to use as a photo template.  You can also cut the photo using your die cut machine—I’m not brave enough, so I went with this method to make sure I cut it exactly where I wanted. To use my method, I’ve found a super cool trick to finding the perfect placement.  First, take the leftover paper from the circle you cut out and place it over your photo until you see exactly what you want to show (see example above).

Next, without moving anything, place the circle back inside the cut out, over your photo, as shown above.

Remove the outer circle piece so that just the circle remains over the photo, like you see in the photo above.

Then carefully pick it up and cut your photo using the circle as your guide.  Now you have your photo cut exactly how you want.

Palm Tree Leaf Border

Download my free palm leaves cut file for Silhouette and cut different sized leaves from 2 – 3 patterned papers.  The photo above includes leaves I cut using my file as well as ephemera from the Sunshiny Days collection.

Adhere the leaves around the circular part of your photo, creating a border of leaves and flowers. Place a few more in the opposite bottom corner (I also added a couple at the top corner of my photo).

Journaling tips

Aloha heart and free cut file by Heather Leopard using @PebblesInc #SunshinyDays collection #scrapbook #summer #scrapbooking #hula #madewithpebbles #aloha #hawaii

Since this week is focusing on journaling, I decided to tackle this 2 ways.  First, this layout will coordinate with a 2nd layout telling the story of how my daughter learned hula, I thought I’d make this the “hero” or title page of the album and use the 2nd page to tell the longer story. With that in mind, I wanted to use a big title.  How does this relate to journaling? Well, the 2nd way I decided to approach this was to use hula blessing as my title.  Since it was too long for an actual title, I hand wrote part of it (journaling) and then put the key part of the quote in Thickers to highlight them.

I enjoy using quotes, song lyrics, things my children say, etc. as my title.  It’s also super fun to mix them in with the journaling. You can easily tell your story instead of a quote (like I did) and then choose key words or phrases in your journaling and highlight them within your story.

Rule of Thirds Heart of Home Inspired Layout!

Hey Everyone! It’s Leanne Allinson here today, sharing a layout created from the new release Heart of Home collection! Maybe you’ll never guess…but I’m using the rule of thirds as inspiration for my design.

Create a @PebblesInc Heart of Home Layout using the rule of thirds as shared by @leanne_allinson.

When creating my pages, I always try to keep in mind basic design principles. These simple steps help my creative process move forward, even when the mojo seems to be running low!

step 1.

My first step is to look at my photos and determine if I can use I clean background or if I should start to build layers with patterned paper on my base. With busy photos, I will limit my background to cardstock only and use patterned paper to highlight elements from the image. However, the photo I am using today has strong lines but not too many clashing colours. I still want to have a clean and simple look to my design—not too busy—so this is where I start to employ the rule of thirds principles.

Using the Heart of Home Painted Dots patterned paper as a layer on top of my cardstock, I trim it to the same width as my layout (8.5″). The length has been roughly trimmed to allow one third of the cardstock to remain visible at the bottom. This design has been subtly highlighted by the strip of green patterned paper, (border of Gatherings patterned paper) so as to divide the two spaces.

step 2.

Using another complementary piece of patterned paper, trim it to occupy the space below the photo cluster. This patterned paper grounds the photo to the cardstock background.

step 3.

Next, find placement for your photo. It generally helps the flow of design if your have your subjects looking towards the middle of your page. Offset your photo/s with a 3″x4″ cut apart from the Heart of Home patterned paper.

step 4.

Now here comes the fun part! Fussy cut three clusters of flowers from the Gatherings patterned paper. Note the use of three different clusters.  I have also added the flowers between the layers of paper and photo near the top, bottom and right hand side.

step 5.

Add three gold foil accent label stickers, overlapping the patterned papers and cardstock to prevent them from looking disjointed. Feel free to add journaling to these labels; I have left them as is.

step 6.

Machine stitching was then added randomly to my patterned paper cluster to create texture and interest. It is hard to see from the photos, but I have also left the excess thread from the stitching, long and loose.

step 7.

Start to highlight your rule of thirds clusters by tucking enamel dots, glittered sticker hearts or any coordinating embellishment between the fussy cut layers. By doing this, you are also creating a visual triangle to help the viewer’s eye move across the page.

step 8.

Finally, add journaling and a splash of black paint.

This new collection offers so many exciting patterned paper options that I truly can’t wait to delve deeper into Heart of Home. Thanks for visiting.

Hello everyone, it’s Eva here bringing you a tutorial for these cute Paper Fans using your favorite designs from the Sunshiny Days collection.

I love to have backyard parties but sometimes the heat can be too much! These paper fans are easy to make and would make a very cute favor for your next outdoor party!

These DIY Paper Fans are going to be a hit on your next party! Just follow this tutorial from @evapizarrov using the new #SunshinyDays collection by @pebblesinc #pebblesinc #madewithpebbles

To make this project use your Trim and Score Board to score your 12 x 12 inch paper every half an inch.

Next, cut your paper in three and bend all the creases. Make a long strip by glueing the edges together (I only used 2 and a half strips)

To create the fan I made holes with my Crop a Dile and then run a thread through them. It’s important to knot the thread really tight, I found that it was easier for me to knot the thread with the fan completely open.

After that, use a rolling pin to flatten some paper straws and use your glue gun to attach them to your fan. Trim the paper straw if necessary.

Finally to embellish the Paper Fans I added a gold pin with a tag. I used my Crop a Dile and my Corner Chomper to create the tags and then embellish them with stickers from the Sunshiny Days collection and some word Stickers from the Simple Life line.

To add a bit of texture to the tags I used my Fuse tool cold and run it through the edge of my tags. I love the effect!

Summertime at the Beach | Mermaid Scrapbook Layout

Heather Leopard here and while I may be back from our trip to Hawaii, I’m still living in vacay mode. Because of that, I figured now would be a good time to get started on documenting the highlights of the trip. Why not start with this summertime at the beach mermaid scrapbook layout?

Be a mermaid & make waves | Mermaid scrapbook layout

Beach Mermaid Scrapbook Layout by Heather Leopard for @pebblesInc using #SunshinyDays collection #mermaid #scrapbook #beach #scrapbooking #madewithpebbles

My daughter loves everything mermaid, from fashion to her favorite television shows to documentaries so we gave her a mermaid tail a few years ago as a gift. She only swims with it when in the pool but we brought it along on the trip for a little play time.

Since the mermaid scrapbook layout was also about the beach, I wanted to incorporate some visuals in that theme – waves and mermaid scales.

Beach Mermaid Scrapbook Layout by Heather Leopard for @pebblesInc using #SunshinyDays collection #mermaid #scrapbook #beach #scrapbooking #madewithpebbles

To begin, cut scallops from the Let’s Float scallop paper to resemble mermaid scales as well as waves. I love the scallops on this paper because they aren’t all shaped the same.

Beach Mermaid Scrapbook Layout by Heather Leopard for @pebblesInc using #SunshinyDays collection #mermaid #scrapbook #beach #scrapbooking #madewithpebbles

Starting at the bottom of the layout, overlap the scallop strips. Layer some more than others so it doesn’t look too symmetrical. Then add a patterned paper to the top half to resemble the beach.  A thin paper strip at the seam helps give the page a more finished look.

Next, add a frame around the photo, a card with hidden journaling tucked behind the photo and also some Hawaiian-themed embellishments. I didn’t want to add too much here because the lower half of the layout is quite busy. I used an anonymous quote I ran across as my title. For a great visual, I wrapped it around my photo and to the side. This also helped fill in some of the empty space on the page.

Last but not least, add additional embellishments around the mermaid scrapbook layout to fulfill the visual triangle design principle. And of course, a fluffing of the scallops helps to finish it off.

I’ve gotta say it—she’s the cutest little mermaids I have ever seen.

Summer Cards with the Girl Squad collection

Hello Pebbles friends and fans, Becki here to share with you some Girl Squad Summer-themed Cards. I’ve been dying to dive into the Girl Squad collection. From the moment this collection landed on my doorstep, I was in love! I knew that I could make some amazing Summer cards! When I started looking through the collection for images to use on my cards, I fell in love with the taco truck sticker and the bike sticker. Those two stickers were “must haves” for this project. Of course, I used patterned paper from the 6×6 paper pad to create these cards. There are so many great pink patterned papers in the collection. I picked two of them to create these cards. Let’s start with the bicycle card. The Stitch Happy sewing machine from We R Memory Keepers is one of my very favorite tools. I used this machine to stitch around the edge of the pink gingham patterned paper. I adhered the paper so the corner was in the middle of the card and trimmed off the excess with my paper trimmer. Putting stickers onto foam adhesive dots is one of my favorite ways to give stickers a little extra dimension. That’s what I did with the bicycle sticker. That cute sticker needs to pop off the background. At the top of the card, I added a “you’re great” sticker. Once again, I used pop dots to give the sticker some dimension. I cut the flower cluster sticker in half and tucked it under the pink patterned paper. The entire sticker was too overwhelming for a small card. This taco truck card is a personal favorite of mine. It makes me smile whenever I see it. I combined a few different patterned papers to create the background of the card. I did keep the majority of the background pink though—I love pink!I kept the design of these two cards very similar. By keeping the design similar, I was able to create these two cards very quickly. Along the bottom of the card I added the taco truck sticker (on pop dots).  My favorite part of this card is the black “taco Tuesday” puffy sticker that I added in the window of the taco truck. How cute is that sticker?!?!? Along the top of the card, I added a sunshine/cloud sticker. I used pop dots to adhere both of these stickers as well. To give both of these cards a little bit of shimmer, I sprinkled some Heidi Swapp color shine on them. I LOVE the finishing touch that the color shine gives to these cards.Thank you for stopping by the Pebbles blog today. Hurry, start creating your Girl Squad Summer cards! You’ll love playing with this fabulous collection. I’ll see you again soon!
