Free For All Friday

Happy Friday everyone! We are wrapping up the week with a few “free for all” projects from some of our design team members.

First up, I (Lynn Ghahary) created a pair of cards using the Happy Go Lucky collection.  I loved the idea of pairing some of the brightly colored patterned papers against a kraft cardstock background.  My first card uses the “bonus” strips that you find at the bottom of each 12 x 12 piece of paper.  I simply cut the strips to varying lengths and stitched them along one edge.  My second card uses some scraps from previous projects along with one of the embossed flower stickers.  I love the font of the lime green Thickers from American Crafts – they are a perfect match to the Happy Go Lucky collection.

Design team member Melinda Spinks absolutely wowed me when she sent along her project for today.  Here’s what Melinda had to say … “This is my very first ‘Free For All Friday’ assignment and I’ve been waiting patiently for the day I had the chance to add another Venetian Mask to my daughters wall. Now, I don’t do them often because they are fiddly little suckers but once they are done, I always end up with a new favourite and my daughter’s bedroom is starting to look more like a mardi-gras with each addition.”

Design team member Mimi Leinbach created an altered clipboard for her niece using the Happy Go Lucky collection.  Here’s what Mimi had to say … “My nieces just had all their rooms newly decorated. My niece Maya wanted an art room and she asked me if I would make something to hang in her room…just like me her favorite color is purple. I decided to alter this clipboard so she could hang it in her room. I thought she could clip her favorite pictures on it like I did or hang her favorite art project from it. I wanted to use the Happy Go Lucky line…it is so perfect for little girls and had just the perfect amount of purple in the collection to suit her room perfectly. I love that this is just a simple project but she will LOVE it so much!”

Product Parade: Alphabet Stickers plus a GIVEAWAY!

Hey everyone! Today we are focusing on one of my favorite Pebbles products … Alphabet Stickers!   Pebbles has so many different types of alphabet stickers that allow you to customize, personalize, title or label just about anything.  With ABC stickers to coordinate with each of our adorable collections you will never be at a loss for words.

Design team member Wendy Sue Anderson created this fun bathroom banner and shows us how easy it is to customize Pebbles ABC stickers to suit any color scheme or decor.  Here’s what Wendy Sue had to say … “For my assignment, I wanted to make a “bathroom rules” sign for the bathroom my two youngest boys share.  They are almost too big for these “cute” elements…but I’m going to keep decorating with cute kiddo stuff until they tell me they are too big for it!  After a bit of trial and error, I decided to make a banner rather than a framed piece.  The letter stickers I wanted to use are really cute, but the color just wasn’t working for me – so I decided to use spray paint to change the color – and what do you know, it matched the paper perfectly!  I cut the banner pieces and the little icons with my Silhouette, layered all of my pieces, added the new fun colored letter stickers, tied it all together with bakers twine and hung it up below a cute rubber-ducky picture that is hanging in their bathroom.”

Design team member Sarah Webb was inspired by the whimsical colors and fonts of our Ransom ABC stickers.  Here’s what Sarah had to say … “The brightly coloured Ransom stickers inspired this page. I really wanted the pictures and the numbers to pop, so I chose a dark coloured background. A list was a perfect way to use the numbers and capture lots of details about our son as he is now.”

Cats & Dogs Ransom ABC Stickers (732012)

So why not use those little alphas in a different way. I decided to cover this little cardboard box with alphas instead of papers and I kinda like it. So I challenge you to have fun with your alpha stash! :D”

What I love most is that I don’t feel like I have to overload my cards, I can let the card be less embellished because the Pebbles products shine so well on their own!  Don’t be afraid to cut card pieces up into smaller sizes if that is what will work best for you!”

How To Tuesday

First things first, I have a winner to announce from last week’s “Friendship” giveaway. Thank you all so much for your comments. And the lucky winner is …

Congratulations! Please email your full name and mailing information (including your phone number for shipping purposes) as well as your choice of current Pebbles collection to pebblesincdt(at)gmail(dot)com and put “Friendship Winner” in the subject line.

Design team member Stephanie Baxter shares how she finds inspiration for her layout designs.  Here’s what Stephanie had to say … “Hello lovely blog readers! I’m so thrilled to be sharing a ‘How to Tuesday’ post with a little bit of a twist. Today I’m going to be showing you how to take an inspiration piece and use it to inspire you to design a layout.”

I don’t know if you’re familiar with Pinterest, but from what I’ve seen, there has been a definite growth in using it to find all sorts of inspiration.  It’s a great place to collect all the things you find on the internet that you love, from home decor to fashion to photography. I also use it to collect things that I see online that I think would be great to incorporate into my scrapbook pages. It’s a great little time saver when it comes to getting your scrapbook pages done, because a lot of the thinking is done for you already!

So, the first thing to do is to find an inspiration piece that you like. You will see that mine immediately translates well into a scrapbook page because of its square design.

Source
Next, you need to pick out some of the elements of the design that you really love and decide how you can translate this on to your layout. The best piece of advice I can give is to keep it simple. Don’t over-think or over-complicate things. And don’t feel like you have to use every single design element that you like … you can always come back to it and use it again on a different layout.

One thing I really loved about the inspiration piece I picked was the banner with the text on it. I’m definitely having a love affair with banners right now, so I knew that I wanted to utilise that particular design element and use it for my title. Look for ways in which you can adapt the design and make it your own. I added a journaling spot behind the banner and embellished it with Candy Dots to make the title stand out even more, for example.

Anything that uses blocks in its design translates really well into scrapbook pages because you can simply cut out pieces of patterned paper or cardstock, or even use photos. Things online or in magazines will have been designed in an aesthetically pleasing way, so you already have a go-to placement for all the main parts of your layout. If you’re anything like me, you often spend hours pushing the photos and paper around or your page trying to decide in which position they look best, so doing a layout this way definitely saves you a lot of time and a lot of hassle! This inspiration piece is a perfect example of that…the four blocks of colour were so easy to replace with four squares of patterned paper on my page.

You can get a really good idea about the quantity and size of photos to use on a layout when using an inspiration piece like this. The main image on my inspiration piece is quite sizeable, so I chose one large image for my layout and layered it on cardstock, leaving a border around the edge just like on the image I found online.

All that’s left to do is to add some embellishments and maybe a strip of patterned paper here and there to make it your own. It’s such a great way of doing things if you’re a little short on time or stuck in a bit of a rut design-wise. I’d love to see how you use an inspiration piece to help design a scrapbook page!

Mix & Match Monday

Happy Monday!  I hope you all had a great weekend.  Time to mix things up a bit on the Pebbles blog as some of our design team members show off their creative skills while mixing and matching products from several Pebbles collections.

Design team member Kryssi Ng created this sweet and simple card using strips of patterned papers from her scrap stash.  Here’s what Kryssi had to say … “I love, love, love, LOVE the extra strips of pattern-y goodness that comes with each sheet of patterned paper. I am not a hoarder by any means, but I was sooo reluctant to trash these babies out after a previous project. The concept of this card came together rather quickly once I picked out strips of paper from my favorite collection: Happy Go Lucky. Such a quick and easy card and I’m glad I was able to use my scraps!”

Design team member Lady Grace Belarmino also used strips of paper to mix and match her Pebbles collections on her adorable layout.  Here’s what LG had to say … “Receiving gorgeous collections makes you want to keep even small leftovers which I did with my Pebbles DT stash. I love leftovers because it challenges me to try something different. Here, I was able to cut a few strips of patterned papers from small pieces leftovers from the Happy Go Lucky and Floral Lane lines. I was also able to use the strip labeling from some of the papers. By simply combining different sizes of strip papers, I was able to finish a quick and fun layout.”
